About the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Race

This year’s event is officially known as the “42st ‘Coca-Cola’ Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Race: 2019 FIM Endurance World Championship Series 3rd Round.” The 8 Hours Endurance Race was first held in 1978 and is known as one of the oldest official motorcycle races in Japan. It has a presence as a gateway to fame for young racers aiming to compete internationally, and the race has also seen appearances by motorcycle legends Kevin Magee, Kevin Schwantz, and Mick Doohan.

The Kenny Roberts / Tadahiko Taira team in the 1985 race became a catalyst for Japan’s four manufacturing giants to stake their prestige by sending out the world’s top riders in droves, instantly raising the average speed for the race. In addition to driving with a stable performance time, maintaining a stable speed has become a condition for victory, which developed into the separate moniker of “sprint endurance” that should make the 8 Hours the most decisive race in the world for motorcycle riders.
